The Safety Strategies web-site is designed for professionals who work with clients impacted by domestic violence. This includes victim advocates, attorneys, criminal justice professionals, mental health professionals, healthcare professionals, and others.
Please note: This web-site is not a crisis response organization, and we refer people in need of immediate services related to domestic violence to the National Domestic Violence Hotline:
The purpose of Safety Strategies is to share research-based resources for safety planning with adults and children whose safety is at risk due to domestic violence victimization. By domestic violence, we are referring to any form of physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, financial, and/or verbal abuse that happens within the context of a current or former intimate relationship.
Safety planning is a common and important intervention for people who have experienced domestic violence. Although there is no way to guarantee anyone's safety in a domestic violence situation, professionals working with clients impacted by domestic violence over the past few decades have been helping their clients develop strategies that can help to promote their safety in a variety of situations.
The Safety Strategies web-site was created by the Family Violence Research Group in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at UNCG. Our research team is made up of counseling professors and current and former Master's and Doctoral students in the department. You can learn more about the research team here.
The safety planning resources we created are based on research we have done with domestic violence service providers to learn about best practices in safety planning. You can learn more about this research here. We are extremely thankful to all of the professionals who participated in our study and shared their resources with us. Their input was critical to developing materials that reflect the complexities of practice in this area.
You can find the Safety Strategies booklet here.
